Mercy's PET/CT procedure uses state-of-the-art technology to capture images within the body. The PET scan captures changes in the body's metabolism caused by the growth of abnormal cells and is used to detect abnormalities in cellular activity generally before there is any anatomical change. The CT scan uses x-rays and a computer to make detailed images of sections of the body's internal structure. A CT scan shows the body's organs, bones and tissues in great detail. Our one machine does both the PET and the CT scans and shows each separately plus a third set of co-registered (or fused) images.
